As part of the global movement of Youth For Christ, Guelph YFC serves youth by caring for their whole person, and helps churches build into the lives of youth in their communities.
We do this by SEEKING opportunities to serve youth aged 12-18, through BUILDING youth confidence in who they were created to be, and by IMPACTING others as transformed youth transform their world.
The ministry of Youth For Christ in Guelph stretches back almost to the beginning of the YFC movement. During the 50s, 60s, and 70s, YFC held youth rallies in Guelph, impacting many lives. However, there was no ongoing and regular work of YFC in the city.
In the early 2010s, a small group of volunteer committee members, along with Highlands YFC, began a concerted effort to reestablish Youth For Christ in Guelph. In 2013, out of the back of a renovated truck (a mobile drop-in centre), that Guelph YFC first opened its doors to young people. With the goal connecting with and meeting the needs of teenagers, Satellite Director Karen Bast, with a small team of volunteers, began offering programming, essential services, and hope. In 2017, we hired Mark Stromenberg (formerly of Cambridge YFC) to fill the role of Drop-In Director. In the years since, we’ve grown to offer numerous programs and services to teenagers and families, positively impacting hundreds of young people.
Guelph Youth For Christ is not a Christian club for Christian kids: it’s a place where all young people, regardless of faith, ethnicity, identity, or orientation can grow, have fun, and be accepted. We also exist to help local churches discover new ways to positively contribute to their community, and to live out the life of love and generosity we are called to.
Today, in partnership with many community organizations, caring businesses, and selfless partners and volunteers, our goal still remains the same: to seek opportunities to create safe, nurturing spaces for young people, to build healthy confidence and identity, and to see transformed youth transform our world.
Guelph YFC exists as a satellite ministry of Highland Youth For Christ. The global movement of YFC is divided into hundreds of independent chapters, allowing for a grassroots approach to the unique needs of each community and country, while providing the support and resources of a larger organization. Highlands YFC is a registered charity and our staff are credentialed members of the clergy in Canada. We are governed by a local Steering Committee, the Highlands Board, and by our National Office.
“To participate in the body of Christ in the responsible evangelism of youth, presenting them with the person, work and teaching of Jesus Christ, and discipling them into the local Church.”
